The Samoan Siva Afi, or fire knife dance, evolved from the traditional ailao, a warrior exhibition of strength, skill, courage, and weapon handling performed with the nifo oti (war knife). The modern fire knife dance developed in the 20th century when flames were added to the knife, transforming the tradition into the spectacular performance celebrated throughout Polynesia and around the world today.
